Call for papers – Volumina Jurassica

CALL FOR PAPERS: THE JURASSIC SYSTEM IN THE WESTERN INTERIOR OF NORTH AMERICA

The editors of Volumina Jurassica invite researchers working in all aspects of the Jurassic of North America’s Western Interior to submit papers for a special themed issue of the journal. Any aspect of the geology of the Jurassic System – structure, tectonics, stratigraphy, sedimentation, paleontology, etc. – is suitable for consideration so long as the study area is in the Western Interior. The volume is scheduled for a 2014 publication date.

Authors should prepare manuscripts using the guidelines below. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically by April 1, 2014 to the volume editors, Lawrence Tanner (TannerLH@LeMoyne.edu) or Spencer Lucas (Spencer.Lucas@State.NM.US). Include the names and contact information for three potential reviewers in the cover letter. Revised and formatted manuscripts are due by June 1, 2014. Large files should be submitted by uploading to a folder on Drop Box. Contact one of the volume editors for more information regarding file transmission, if needed.

Author Guidelines

Volumina Jurassica, a journal supported by the ISJS, is a peer-reviewed geological journal, edited by the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute and the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw, devoted to the publication of original research papers on all aspects of the Jurassic System.

Volumina Jurassica publishes both original research articles and reviews – special papers presenting a comprehensive analysis of material previously published. It is assumed that manuscripts in both these categories submitted to the journal have not been published or submitted to any other journal or book. It is assumed also that the corresponding author represents all the co-authors in certifying that all of them contributed meaningfully in the preparation of the study, and that the final submitted version of the text is approved by all the co-authors.

Preparation of text. Volumina Jurassica is published in English. The length of the manuscript should not exceed 60 normalized pages, including references, illustrations and tables. The author(s) should clearly state their name(s), addresses, phone, fax and e-mail on the title page.

The manuscript should include an abstract, key words (5–7) and references. The manuscript (in MS Word) should be prepared in A4 format with a 3 cm left margin and 1.5 line-spacing, single column. Paragraphs must be separated by a 1 cm indentation, and the text must be without right-margin justification and hyphenation. Use a common, plain font e.g. Times New Roman 12 pt., and number text pages consecutively. Use SI units only. Citation of references must be placed in parentheses with the author’s last name and year of publication e.g. (Wright, 2010; Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2006; Matyja et al., 2006). The heading hierarchy should include at most three levels. Headings should be numbered consecutively, in Arabic numerals, as follows: first level headings – 1, 2, etc.; second level headings – 1.1, 1.2, etc.; third level headings – 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc. Figure captions should be prepared separately. The main body text should not include tables and illustrations.

Abstract. The abstract should not exceed 200 words. It should report briefly the methods, results and conclusions contained in the work. Literature citations in the abstract are not allowed.

Key words. After the abstract, list 5–7 key words that describe the subject matter of the work.

References. References should include literature cited both in the text and in the explanations of figures. References should be listed at the end of the main text alphabetically by senior author. Do not abbreviate journal names. Give the names of editors of symposium volumes and of edited books. For books it is necessary to give the publisher’s name and place of publication. References in non-Latin alphabets must be transliterated.

Tables. Tables should be prepared as separate files in MS Word format (A4 maximum).

Illustrations. Drawings should be submitted in CDR or AI format and photographs in TIFF, PSD or CPT format. Photographs and bitmaps should be high-resolution (the minimum resolution: colour bitmaps – 300 dpi, grayscale – 600 dpi, line art – 1200 dpi). The maximum publication size of illustrations is 175 × 220 mm. Explanations of graphic elements (map patterns, symbols, etc.) should be included on figures. Where appropriate, all figures (maps, etc.) must have a scale bar.

Figures, plates as well as tables must be successively numbered and quoted as Fig./Figs, Pl./ Pls (figures in plates quoted as Pl. 1: 7) and Tab./ Tabs when belonging to this paper; when the quotation refers to the figures/plates/tables of another paper they should be indicated as fig./pl./tab., respectively.

Illustrations are usually reduced in size for publication; thus, lettering must be large enough to permit reduction of up to 30 or even 50 percent. The approximate position of text-figures and tables should be indicated in the manuscript margin. Although it is possible to publish colour illustrations as well as scanned photographs, they can be accepted only in exceptional circumstances.

Manuscripts fulfilling the editorial requirements are subject to peer-review. Authors submitting their manuscripts are requested to propose at least three possible reviewers, but the final choice of reviewers is up to the Editor. Each proposed reviewer should be suitably qualified to review the study, and should not be in a close working relationship with the authors (i.e. there should not be conflict of interest involved). Any scientist who authors wish to exclude as a potential candidate for reviewer could be indicated with the reason given for such an exclusion.

The manuscript will be examined normally by two reviewers. The editors will inform the author of the opinion of the reviewers – and provide their reports. The procedure from submitting the manuscript to receiving the opinion of the reviewers should not take longer than 5 weeks.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.

Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

The text is 1.5 spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).

The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

All figures, tables and plates should be submitted as individual files.
